If your child is challenged by Autism, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD), Asperger Syndrome, and other developmental difficulties you are at the best place!
My name is Barbara Balla. I am a special needs teacher and a certified Son-Rise® Child Facilitator.
I learnt about the Son-Rise Program during my studies to be special needs teacher in 2001 when I joined a lovely family to help their autistic child. I, among others, worked with the little boy for two years as a volunteer using the Son-Rise Program. During this time I visited the Autism Treatment Center of America in Sheffield Massachusetts, where I spent 11 weeks as a volunteer. After having graduated as a special needs teacher at university, I moved to Sweden for 10 months and to Scotland for 8 months to work with Son-Rise families to get more experience. I had worked as a volunteer in different Son-Rise Programs for 4 years altogether, and started my professional child facilitator training at The Autism Treatment Center of America in August 2006. The 1.5 years provided me with the opportunity to learn to love and accept someone without any judgements or expectations, and be present for 3 hours straight. It was an incredible experience and a special chance to grow.. I finished my training in February 2008, and have been working with Son-Rise families all over in Europe and in Nigeria since then.
For me the Son-Rise Program is a unique and incredible way of helping children and adults with autism. It is about love, acceptance
and respect. It focuses on the child and helps them where help is really needed, to become a socially successful, independent person.
It is amazing to meet so many wonderful little people, and after spending some time with them seeing their smiles, happiness and how much
they enjoy being joined, celebrated and loved. It is so easy to make a connection from the place of total acceptance, love and respect.
It is wonderful to see when children have the first contact with someone who doesn't push them at all and happy to play their
games for hours (join their isms) if that is what they chose to do. They just "soak" it in, relax and appreciate it so much.
I get the most amazing smiles, looks, hugs from my little friends. By giving them the opportunity to take care of themselves and be
who they are without any judgements or need to be someone else or do something else they can recharge and be ready to make steps toward
things that might be challenging for them. I see with many children that they love to be challenged because it happens when they are
ready for it and it comes with fun and easiness. Can you imagine anything better than having a friend who is so excited about what you
love and is there for you to help you on the way when you face challenges in your life? I am so grateful I can be a friend like that
for the children I play with and to have the opportunity to be part of their lives.

As a Son-Rise child facilitator I work with families in their homes. My visit can take 1 day up to 2-3 weeks. During an outreach I work with the child 5 hours a day and have a question and answer and/or brainstorming session with the parents and the volunteer team for an hour a day.
A child facilitator outreach is a great opportunity to see a qualified facilitator working in the playroom, to get personalized input, to see how the Son-Rise techniques are put into practice, to get help with game building skills and to brainstorm games. I see that during an outreach I can help families gain back their enthusiasm , get fresh ideas, see what direction to take in their program.
You are welcome to invite your volunteers, family members, friends to watch the outreach. You are also welcome to videotape me playing with your child and the Q&A session. You can use the videos later on to train your volunteers or get inspiration.
When I work in a non-English speaking country I learn basic words and phrases in the child's language and I work with the volunteers as translators in the playroom.
The cost of the outreach is:
Teaching Time: £35 / 38 € / 130 PLN per hour
Travel Time: £6 / 5 € / 16 PLN per hour
Travel costs (I am either travelling from Hungary where I am originally from or England where I live now)
Accommodation and meal costs

"As parents, we can instantly say whether someone else loves and accepts our son (4,5 years old Milan). Barbara truly does... and we love her back.
She visited us first time in April, 2008 and was the first "stranger" (not Mommy or Daddy) to walk into the playroom with Milan. She was our role model showing us how to get along with crying and resistance. We learned so much by looking at Barbara introducing new games and activities, encouraging Milan to communicate and to look at us more. It was amazing how much energy, creativity and user-friendliness she could generate and how Milan responded to it.
Since then we have hosted several outreaches - Barbara came to visit us every 2-3 months. She is such an important part of the program and of our extended family. She always helps Milan face his most significant challenges and never uses shortcuts. We have used many of her ideas and we keep playing some games which she invented. Our volunteers had an opportunity to watch Barbara's sessions and this was a very effective training aid for them. The time she spends with our family is always joyful, harmonious and it often marks important milestones in our son's growth.
We'd recommend working with Barbara to every Son-Rise family. Whether you've just started your program or you run it for several months, you can always benefit from the outreach visit and add flavour to your program."
Son-Rise parents, Poland"Barbara was an inspiration to watch. She quickly built up rapport and trust with Louix and showed him love & respect throughout their time together. This meant his interactions grew from day 1 of 1 minute to 8 minutes on day 3. His speech also increased from one word to an increase in 2 word requests.
Barbara has revitalized our enthusiasm and passion to work with our son. She has shown us new ways to interact and engage him. We only wish she was a full time volunteer for us. We have already recommended her to lots of our son-rise friends."
Son-Rise parents, UK"First and foremost it was a great inspiration for us that game us new strength and hope for our future. We a saw a significant change in our son after just two days of the outreach. His eye-contact improved a lot and his willingness to communicate emerged visibly and we learnt how to use his motivations to keep him engaged in different games. Also having our volunteers observing it, they said it was the best way for them to learn about the Son-Rise in practice and see what they can do themselves in the playroom."
Son-Rise parents, Poland"The first thing I observed while Barbara was in Nigeria working with Emmy was the way she arranged all the toys on the shelf and when I question her on this, she said "so that he could ask for them and this will make him see the usefulness of interacting with people". And it truly worked and is still working!
Her enthusiastic way of joining never ceases to amaze me and I believe this was also what made Emmy to pause while doing his isms to look at her and smile. I also remember her exciting and friendly tone she used to celebrate him every time he looked directly into her eyes. I must say that it is really spell binding, no wonder she was able to increase his eye contact and help him also to increase his attention span.
I was wondering if all Hungarians are so energetic because her swift and quick response to every sounds Emmy made whenever he tried to communicate, his gestures and his mere looking at the shelf made it so easy for him to start opening up to more games and play.
Most importantly, what tripped me is how patiently she waited for him to give her the green light and her quick response to introduce games and play, which usually helped him use more words, look longer and attend to the game.
I have gotten so much by observing her, she have helped me to learn how to go with the flow and appreciate every moment with Emmy."
Son-Rise volunteer, Nigeria"It was an amazing and unique experience for us to see Barbara work with our child in the playroom. He instantly adored her and his gains in language in just three days were unbelievable. Our volunteers were truly inspired and the visit has helped our Son-Rise programme reach a whole new level."
Son-Rise parents, UK"We have had the pleasure of having Barbara doing an outreach for our company. She worked with two of our customers demonstrating all the principles of the sonrise program. After the playroom sessions she explained in a very understandable way to our staff what she had been doing and why.
After the outreach we could see several members of our team doing giant steps in their development in being son-rise facilitators.
Barbara has a wonderful personality and is doing a top of the line job. We are definitely going to have her here for more outreaches."

In the video Grant and I are playing a ride game in a box, which Grant likes a lot. I am using his motivation to help him look at me more. I stop from time to time to ask for a look and I celebrate every time Grant looks at me or talks to me. While sounds are coming very easily for Grant, he rarely looks at me, therefore, the primary aim of the game is to encourage eye-contact. Besides, I also note and celebrate Grant's verbal communication, and model the word "ride" a lot.
Whenever Milan is not attending to me I join him and do the same activity he is doing. When he gives
me a green light I celebrate him and build the game of me moving around. My goal in the game is to have
Milan's attention longer and indirectly help him to say the word "move" (rusac in Polish). This is why
I label what I am doing.
At the end of the game Milan says a very clear "F" sound, which is the first sound of chips in Polish. This
was the first time when he has said this sound. I celebrate him hugely and very quickly respond to his
request.
